Nicola entered the professional services arena in 1989, acting as a consultant and handling the PR and marketing for Wansbroughs (now Beachcroft LLP), Ernst & Young in the South West, GEAC Computers and Clifton College, among others.
In 1991, she moved in-house to join Wansbroughs as their first national Marketing Director and whilst there, oversaw the marketing and re-branding aspects of the merger with Leeds-based Willey Hargrave. She also introduced strategic planning and a client relationship programme.
Nicola joined Osborne Clarke in 1998 as Client Services Director, responsible for the firm's marketing strategy and its tactical implementation across all offices, including the firm's European Alliance. In particular, she focused on implementing a CRM programme, as well as a formalised approach to tenders increasing the win rate to over 66%. In 2000 Legal 500 stated that "[Osborne Clarke's] skill in marketing…has enabled it to make significant inroads into new legal markets".
In 2001 she took up the newly created position of Head of E-business at Osborne Clarke and led the firm's UK knowledge management programme. Her remit included developing and implementing the firm's online strategies for e-commerce, the intranet and client extranets.
She was responsible for Osborne Clarke winning the Western Daily Press 2001 award for “Best large commercial website”, and the firm was short-listed in the “Best legal e-commerce initiative” and “IT law firm of the year” categories at the prestigious LOTIE (Legal Office Technology) awards in 2002 and 2003.
She founded Implementor in early 2003 and was commissioned to edit and co-write 'Internet Marketing: strategies for law firms' by the Law Society. Since setting up the consultancy she has been involved in a range of projects for Jordans Ltd (the UK's leading company formation agents), Wards Solicitors, Osborne Clarke, Withy King, the Collaborative Family Law Group, and most recently for Manches.
Her non-legal sector clients have included Dreweatt Neate (surveyors), Momentum Corporate Finance, Park Properties (residential property developers) and the Beeches Veterinary Centre.
She has played an active role in the Professional Services Marketing Group (PSMG) and was Regional Director of the PM Forum in the South West. She is regularly asked to speak at professional services networking events about best practice in professional services marketing.
